Utilities & Utility Bills
Below are details regarding the basic utilities services in Western Australia. In general terms these services are very good especially considering the vast areas they have to cover, but can be a little expensive compared to other western socities.
Electricity Utilities
In most parts of Western Australia, the electricity, gas and telephone companies are readily waiting to offer their services. They operate in much the same way as the UK except there are fewer companies to choose from.
There are just a few electricity suppliers and electricity is mainly produced by coal-fired power stations which are usually located in remote locations close to coalfields.
Gas Utilities
Gas is the same in that only a few large companies supply gas at present. Gas availability is very different in Western Australia dependant upon where you live. Natural gas can be a bit hit and miss due to the lack of gas mains, mainly in rural areas. Liquid Propane Gas cylinders are normally fitted to houses where natural gas is not available.
Telecommunications Utilities
Your location will determine the choice you have regarding telephone service carriers. Telstra is the main player and is currently part government owned and partly privately owned. Other suppliers are starting to install the infrastructure to enable them to supply and compete against Telstra. Shop around - there are competetive prices to be had.
Council Rates Utilities
You will be liable for paying rates once you have purchased a property rather than renting one
Water Rates Utilities
Water rates are payable in two parts. One is a service charge and the second is for water usage calculated by an individual meter.
