For the most part utility services are very good in Western Australia. Prices are comparable with other western countries. It must be remembered though that to provide some of the main utility services to the more rural areas can be a very difficult task for those utility services operators to achieve.

Electricity Utility Services

In most parts of Western Australia, the electricity, gas and telephone companies are readily waiting to offer these utility services. They operate in much the same way as in other westren countries except there are fewer companies to choose from.

There are just a few electricity suppliers and it is mainly produced by coal-fired power stations which are usually located in remote locations close to coalfields.

Gas Utility Services

Gas is the same in that only a few large companies supply gas at present. Gas availability is very different in Western Australia dependant upon where you live. Natural gas can be a bit hit and miss due to the lack of gas mains, mainly in rural areas. Liquid Propane Gas cylinders are normally fitted to houses where natural gas is not available.

Telecommunications Utility Services

Your location will determine the choice you have regarding telephone service carriers. Telstra is the main player and is currently part government owned and part privately owned. Other suppliers are starting to install the infrastructure to enable them to supply and compete against Telstra. Shop around - there are competetive prices to be had.

Council Rates

You will be liable for paying rates once you have purchased a property but you are not normally liable to pay rates when renting one

Water Rates

Water rates are payable in two parts. One is a utility service charge and the second is for water usage calculated by an individual meter situated at the premises
