Natures Calendar - Western Australia boasts an amazing line up of spectacular natural events and attractions, many of which are only found in a handful of locations on Earth.

Regularly occurring at particular times or seasons of the year, they offer unique opportunities for visitors to be touched by natures wonder. A brief overview of the yearly events is below.



Abalone - November to December.

Abalone is a succulent shellfish which breeds in shallow, coastal waters. It’s particularly plentiful in Western Australian waters, where conditions are perfect for its growth and breeding.


Coral spawning and whale sharks - March to May

Probably the highlight of natures calendar, one night each March the waters of Ningaloo Reef, in Australia's Coral Coast, literally come alive as more than 200 species of corals spawn


Dolphins - All Year

Western Australia’s warm waters are home to the playful bottlenose dolphin. This means the calendar is all year. While they can be found all along the coastline, there are four main regions where visitors are more likely to have a dolphin interaction.


Seals and Sea lions - All Year

New Zealand fur seals and the commonly seen Australian Sea Lion are prevalent right along the southern waters of Western Australia. You are most likely to see them in Perth, Albany and Esperance.


Fairy Penguins - September to June

One of natures quirky creatures Fairy Penguins are the smallest of the penguin family and can be found swimming freely in the Shoalwater Marine Park, less than one hour from Perth city.


Migratory Birds - August to November

Western Australia has a rich diversity of bird life including raptors, seabirds, shorebirds and parrots. Thousands of migratory birds visit each year with the North West being a special spot for waders and shorebirds.


Staircase to the Moon - March to October

Visitors to Broome in Western Australia's North West are able to see the natural spectacle – the Stairway to the Moon, when conditions are just right.


Turtles - December to February

Many of the top events of natures calendar happen at Ningaloo Reef, located in Western Australia's Coral Coast. It is home to Green, Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Flatback turtles. The turtles come each year to breed amongst the reefs and beaches.


Whale migration - May

One of natures top calendar events is in May which signals the beginning of the annual whale migration in Western Australia. Humpback and southern right whales travel along the coast making their way from the food-rich southern ocean to breeding grounds in the warm northern waters.


Wildflowers - July to November

Western Australia’s landscape bursts with colour from July to November, when native wildflowers bloom across the State. Floral extravaganzas can be seen in all regions at different times throughout the season.
