New migrants to the country are unable to claim any benefits until the two years residence time has elapsed. There is one exception however, and families are entitled to claim the UK equivalent of Child Benefit regardless of the residential time in Australia. It is possible to claim this benefit as soon as you arrive in Australia.

Australian Benefits

The Australian benefits are broken down into two categories namely:

  1. FAMILY TAX BENEFIT PART A and PART B; this is paid to assist with the cost of raising children
  2. Child care benefit is also available which is to assist families with the cost of approved child care at approved child care centres. This benefit is available to all families who meet the means test criteria.

The Family Assistance Office can help you with your enquiries regarding these benefits. They are usually located within a Centrelink office and also within Medicare offices. The staff are normally very helpful and knowledgeable.
