Western Australia is home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches. With an expansive coastline, spanning top to bottom of the state, it’s no wonder. Aussie beaches are very appealing to those people looking to snorkel, surf, fish, swim, windsurf, sun bath and those who like to watch the sunset.

With so many to choose from, travellers and locals alike are spoiled for choice when it comes to beachside activities. Cottesloe Beach, Cable Beach, Scarborough Beach, Coral Bay and the many bays of Rottnest Island are among the favourites, but are by no means the only places to play in the surf and sand.

The beach is an integral part of Western Australian life . No visitor should miss the quintessential Western Australian experience - sunset over the wonderful Indian Ocean!

Let’s go surfing

Western Australia is renowned for its many surfing beaches. You’ll find the biggest surf in the metropolitan area at Scarborough Beach and Trigg Beach – both only 20 minutes from Perth

Or a 90 minute drive north will find you in Lancelin, where there’s more swell and fewer surfers.

The South West is well known among surfers around the globe, who rate Yallingup and Margaret River high on the list of hot spots. You’ll find big and small waves, and there are plenty of strong reef breaks and hearty sandbanks, too.

The region also hosts the prestigious annual Salomon Masters at Margaret River, which attracts plenty of spectators to watch some of the world’s best surfers in action.

The beaches are astonishingly colourful in Esperance. Tucked away near the south-east corner of Western Australia, the ocean is a mix of every imaginable shade of blue and provides stark contrast to the snow white sand.

On a visit to Lucky Bay, you may find yourself sharing the shoreline with sunbathing kangaroos – a unique and humorous sight. Snorkelling and diving are popular pastimes, and Esperance is a mecca for windsurfers looking for a wind-in-the-hair experience of the marine kind. Summer afternoons are reputed to provide the best ‘puff’. Broome’s Cable Beach is arguably Western Australia’s most famous seaside spot. Take a sunset camel ride along the seemingly endless 22 kilometre stretch of brilliant white sand, and be captivated by its sparkling turquoise waters.

Discover for yourself why people return to the incredibly beautiful Western Australian coastline time and again.
