'Soccer' as it is known is played at the highest level in the 'A-league Soccer' which is a nationwide competition recently set up. Being up against Aussie Rules footy, ccricket, rugby and other sports that Australia excel in ahs med it very difficult for the growth od 'soccer' in Australia. WA's team is Perth Glory who have struggled in recent years due to the financial power of the Eastern state clubs. The A-league's following has certainly increased especially with the Socceroos reaching the 2006 World Cup finals.

The A-League Soccer History

A little over two years ago, the wheels were set in motion for a new national football (or soccer as it was known then) competition to be introduced on to the Australian sporting public, culminating in the launch of the Hyundai A-League Soccer. The decision to start afresh will hopefully begin the revitalisation of the game at the domestic level in Australia. There are many facets involved in the staging of a national competition and should be regarded as equally as important as what happens on the field.
