Immigration Identification Documents
When registering with Government agencies and financial institutions for the first time, you will have to prove your identity using identification documents, listed below are some of the normal requirements. A number of organisations work on a points system of documentary identity and others work on a primary and secondary documentary evidence basis. Firstly, you will need to have an Australian address for all correspondence and a post office box number will not suffice. A priority is to use a family member's or friend's address or rent a dwelling to provide this base for correspondence.
Migrants require the following documentation upon arrival:
Original birth certificate
Original marriage certificate
Change of name documentation
Current driving licence
Current valid passport which contains your Australian visa
An Australian address and the above mentioned documents should enable you to obtain:
a Medicare card
an Australian driving licence
Once you have the above two documents these together with your other documents should then anable you to then progress setting up your life in Australia.
Examples of identity requirements
Most vehicle transport offices would require you to provide identification when applying for licences and you will need to show :
1 x Primary proof of identity document
1 x Secondary proff of identity document
Proof of date of birth
Proof of residency, showing where you live
Primary documents
These documents which establish the legal existence of your name and date of birth are:
Birth Certificate
Current Passport or an expired passport which expired no more than 2 years ago
Immigration papers issued by the Commonwealth Depart of Immigration or naturalisation or citizenship certificate
Secondary Documents
Secondary documents establish your identity as the person presenting the primary documents and inclue:
Current Australian driving licence with a photograph on the licence
An official government identification card with your signature
Bank or credit card with your signature
Library card, club or video shop membership card
If your primary and secondary documents do not provide evidence of your birth date and residence you will need to provide additional evidence as below:
Proof of date of birth
An original birth certificate
Proof of residency
A paid utilities bill or rates notice showing the same name and address
A letter from the Australian Tax Office
A statement from your employer on their letter heading confirmin your residential address and how long you have been employed by them
Proving Your Identity for banking institutions and some government agencies based on a points system as required by Federal Law
Example documents
Your current passport
Evidence of residential status - visa
Birth certificate
Australian Driving licence
If you have the above mentioned documents you will reach 100 points which would satisfy the requirements.
