If for instance you hold a UK driving licence then you are able to drive the class of motor vehicle - except buses or heavy duty vehicles - which you are authorised under that licence until that licence expires. This applies only when you are not a permanent resident or not an Australian citizen or you have NOT been granted a permanent visa.

If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident you are only authorised to drive in Western Australia under the foreign drive licence for a period of 3 months starting from:

The date you take up residency in Western Australia

The date you were granted the permanent or special category visa

Fundamentally, if you hold a current full UK car licence you can apply for a Western Australian drivers licence of the same class. UK licence holders do not have to take a practical driving test or a written test but need to comply with the following:

Produce your valid current driving licence and supporting evidence of identity

Provide evidence of residency with your visa and passport

Completion of an application form including a medical declaration
Pass an eyesight test and pay for the licence either for 1 year or 5 year term (the 5 year term is much more economicacl)

Complete all the above within the stated time frame

In Western Australia, you have to carry your drivers licence - Australian or otherwise - with you at all times!

Try to get your driving licence as soon as possible as this will ensure you avoid breaking or infringing the WA State laws. It is also of great benefit as a part of your identification documents. Proof of identity needs to be provided when making application. Happy Motoring!
