Why should an Australian migrant need to know about JP's (justice of the peace)? - JP's are ordinary people, usually not lawyers, who have been trained and then appointed as a Justice of the Peace and are regulated by State laws. Their basic duties are to sign and witness documents and this service is provided free of charge! They hold office in an honorary capacity and do not get paid for the service they provide to their community.

The sort of documents a JP can witness is as follows:

Affidavits - affirmed documents
British Passports - if the person is known to the JP
Consent forms for divorce
Consent to medical and palliative care
Education certificates
Enduring Power of Attorney
Guardianship Power of Attorney
Insurance forms
Land transfer forms
Medical Power of Attorney
Power of Attorney
Statutory Declarations

You can find a local JP listed in your local free paper or ask for the information from your local Council offices, post office or contact the office of the Attorney General's Department for a list of available JP's in your local area
